NASA, Another Mission to Mars

InSight mission to Mars is set for March 8–March 27, 2016

Source: Jet Propulsion Laboratory - Mission Overview - InSight (Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport) is a proposed NASA Discovery Program mission that will place a single geophysical lander on Mars to study its deep interior. But InSight is more than a Mars mission - it is a terrestrial planet explorer that will address one of the most fundamental issues of planetary and solar system science - understanding the processes that shaped the rocky planets of the inner solar system (including Earth) more than four billion years ago.

By using sophisticated geophysical instruments, InSight will delve deep beneath the surface of Mars, detecting the fingerprints of the processes of terrestrial planet formation, as well as measuring the planet's "vital signs": Its "pulse" (seismology), "temperature" (heat flow probe), and "reflexes" (precision tracking)

Video: Mission team members for InSight, the new Mars lander mission selected by NASA to launch in 2016, explain how the spacecraft will advance our knowledge of Mars' history and rocky planet evolution.

Download the InSight Fact Sheet (PDF)
  • Launch — March 8–March 27, 2016
  • Landing — September 20, 2016
  • Surface operations — 720 days / 700 sols
  • First science return — October 2016
  • Instrument deployment — 60 sols (including 20 sols margin)
  • Data volume over 1 Martian year — More than 29 Gb (processed seismic data posted to the Web in 2 weeks; remaining science data less than 3 months, no proprietary period)
  • End of Mission — September 10, 2018

Astronaut Neil Armstrong dies at 82

FOX News "Armstrong died Saturday following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures, a statement from his family said. It didn't say where he died. Armstrong commanded the Apollo 11 spacecraft that landed on the moon July 20, 1969, capping the most daring of the 20th century's scientific expeditions. His first words after setting foot on the surface are etched in history books and in the memories of those who heard them in a live broadcast.

Kodak to END it's role in consumer photography

Eastman Kodak Company announced they will be selling their Personalized Imaging and Document Imaging businesses ending their role as a consumer photographic company. Kodak says it will continue to make film for the movie industry and will continue with it's 'Specialist Film' division who make large-format films for aerial and industrial photography. They also intend to keep it's Consumer Inkjet division making it one of the last public facing businesses.  Learn more about Kodak's reorganization

The Wall Street Journal reported  that many of the world's biggest technology companies, including Samsung, Apple and Google, have formed a consortium to bid for Kodak's digital imaging patents. Kodak is hoping the sale of it's patents will raise $2.2bn which would help the remains of the company get from under the Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

500 Pound RC Plane

A 500-pound Model Plane
Tests the Next Generation
of Aircraft Design

QUOTE: "While the design has yet to catch on with civilian air travelers (focus groups hate amphitheater-style seating), Blended Wing Body aircraft hold great promise for military operations. To better study this innovative design without sinking untold extra millions into R&D, NASA built the next best thing—a 1:8.5 scale RC demonstrator"

VIDEO: NASA's Curiosity Mars landing Successful

Published on Jul 30, 2012 by

Actor William Shatner narrates this thrilling video about NASA's Curiosity rover, from its entry and descent through the Martian atmosphere to its landing and exploration of the Red Planet in NASA's hardest planetary science mission to date.

NASA's most advanced Mars rover Curiosity has landed on the Red Planet. The one-ton rover, hanging by ropes from a rocket backpack, touched down onto Mars Sunday to end a 36-week flight and begin a two-year investigation.

The Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) spacecraft that carried Curiosity succeeded in every step of the most complex landing ever attempted on Mars, including the final severing of the bridle cords and flyaway maneuver of the rocket backpack.

MIT: Autonomous robotic plane flies indoors

New algorithms allow an autonomous robotic plane to dodge obstacles in a subterranean parking garage, without the use of GPS

For decades, academic and industry researchers have been working on control algorithms for autonomous helicopters — robotic helicopters that pilot themselves, rather than requiring remote human guidance. Dozens of research teams have competed in a series of autonomous-helicopter challenges posed by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI); progress has been so rapid that the last two challenges have involved indoor navigation without the use of GPS ... continued

Canon announces EOS-1D C 4K DSLR

Quote dpreview: "Canon has unveiled its promised 4K capable DSLR, the EOS-1D C, which can capture 4K (4096 x 2160 pixel) video at up to 24p without downscaling, from an APS-H crop of its 18MP full-frame sensor. The camera, which shares the majority of its specifications with the still-awaited EOS 1D X, can also capture 1080p60 or 50p or output it uncompressed over its HDMI connector. Full HD can be captured from a 16:9 crop from the whole sensor, or a smaller, APS-C-like Super 35mm sub-frame that allows the use of Canon's EF Cinema Zoom lenses. The camera will cost around €10,000 (exact price to be confirmed) and will be available from October"

Deborah Scholom Photography

In recognition of some fine photography I want to share a find I think everyone will enjoy. Simply an excellent photographer. My good friend Pelagic Pilot over at Southern Oregon RC Forums who showed me her work is also a friend of this artist extraordinaire. Someone to aspire too as I'm certain it will be a long while before I reach this photographers level of proficiency.

Enjoy ...

Got diamonds you don't need any more? Melt 'em with this

QUOTE: "Sandia National Laboratories' Z machine sounds like it belongs in a James Bond movie more than it does an Alberquerque research facility. Based on what it can do, that's not as far-fetched as it seems. What you see isn't the handiwork of some electric spider -- it's what you witness in the immediate fraction of a second after the Z's electromagnetic pulse kicks in and forks of lightning burst across the 108-foot distance inside. The pulse in question is key to Sandia's studies of fusion and the effect of very intense magnetic pressures on materials that normally refuse to change states. Even in 2006, the Z was putting out pressure more than 10 million times that of the atmosphere, and it successfully melted diamond at roughly half that strength"
